How To Organize Your Garage

July 20, 2006 By: RealLifeSolutions Category: Organization, Uncategorized No Comments →

The garage and/or workshop can be one of the most cluttered areas of the home. Many products are available to help sort and organize the different items in the garage, but all you really need are some basic items that can be found around the house or purchased at a local discount store and your own creativity. Here are ten quick tips to get your garage organized without spending a fortune.

1. Use a large garbage can to store bulky sports equipment such as balls, baseball bats, and hockey sticks.

2. Small plastic food containers can be used to hold small pieces of your current project. If you don’t complete the project immediately, just label the cover with masking tape and permanent marker. All the pieces will stay together and the container will be easy to identify.

3. Install large hooks for items such as hoses, extension cords and folding chairs. Coat hooks work great for this.

4. Plastic office organizers work great in the garage. They can be used for sand paper, tools, and other small items.

5. Printer paper boxes are sturdy and stack well. Check with local offices, they may just give some to you.

6. If your garage is unfinished, use the space between the studs for shelves. Just cut a 2×4 to size and nail in place. This works great for small containers and spray paint cans.

7. Baby food jars work great for very small item such as nails and screws. Just screw the lid to the bottom of a shelf, fill the jar, and twist into the lid.

8. Use canisters or jars on the workbench to hold frequently used tools.

9. Staple twine or heavy string to a board at about one-inch intervals leaving a little slack between staples. The loops created by the slack work great for storing screwdrivers. Secure the board to a convenient location.

10. Label Everything! You don’t need fancy labels, masking tape and a permanent marker work just fine.

An excellent place to look for garage organizing ideas is in the kitchen. Items such as silverware trays, dish strainers, spice racks, plus a whole lot more have many potential uses in the garage.

Here’s How To Add Some Fun Into Your Day

Ever Get Grumpy? Read This & Add Some FUN Into Your Day

As busy moms, I am sure there are times when you get a tad grumpy. Admit it, we all do (smile).

Well, here are a few fun tips that you can incorporated into your life:

Make a *FUN* list. Make a list of the current activities or hobbies that bring enjoyment to your life.  Also be sure to include the hobbies or activities that you have never tried but you think would be fun.   Work to pick one item off of your Fun List and do it ASAP.

Get together with some girlfriends. One of the best ways to rediscover yourself is to spend some time with your girlfriends each week. Have lunch together, go to the movies to watch the latest chick flick, or plan a girl’s night out every once in a while.

Pamper Yourself. Do something every month to pamper yourself. Go et a new haircut. Visit your favorite nail saloon for a manicure, pedicure or to get your nails done. Call your favorite day spa and schedule a facial. Get a massage.  You can even do some inexpensive things at home after the children have gone to bed.  Light some candles and enjoy a  quiet bubble bath.

Don’t feel guilty about taking time for yourself a few times a week. Your kids will appreciate it when they get a balanced and fun mom in return. You will be more relaxed, happier and actually be able to enjoy your family. After all, that’s why you had kids in the first place, isn’t it?

Keeping Your Children Busy When Working From Home

July 15, 2006 By: RealLifeSolutions Category: Uncategorized, Working From Home No Comments →

30th January 2006

Juggling children and work can be a challenge, whether you work outside the home or you are a work from home mom, but, in some ways, work from home moms face more challenges than moms who work outside the home. After all, when you’re in a traditional office, you don’t need to worry that a coworker will burst into the room and scream “Mommy, he took my doll,” just as you are beginning an important conference call.

So how does a work from home mom manage to keep her children happy and busy while she is trying to get her job done?

First, you need to let your children know when you are not to be disturbed. Set up a schedule that includes playtime and work time and remind them that if they don’t disturb you while you are working, you will be able to give them your complete attention during playtime. As a reminder, use a do not disturb sign on your office door when you absolutely cannot be interrupted.

Of course, it is easy for your children to behave while you are working if they have something to do. Fill a box with games and toys that can only be used while mom is working. Make sure you add a new puzzle, coloring book, or small toy on a frequent basis, to keep your children interested.

If you don’t work on the phone, it is a bit easier to keep your children content when you are working. Set up an office space just for them, complete with a small table and chairs. Fill a lunch box with some of their favorite snacks and a few juice boxes each morning, so you aren’t inundated with requests for food and drinks. Add a children’s magazine, simple puzzles, coloring books, and art supplies. When your children are able to work along side you, the number of interruptions should decrease drastically.

For moms who really need peace and quiet, but have small children, a mother’s helper can be a great solution. Since you will still be in the house, you do not need a fully trained baby sitter to help out. Instead, look for a teen who has little babysitting experience, but likes kids. She will probably be happy to watch your children while you work for the cost of a few good after school snacks and a few dollars.

Finally, sometimes it’s just not possible to keep your children quiet and content while you are working. If your child is ill, you may just need to decide to take the day off. After all, the reason you are working from home is to have the flexibility to be there for your children when they need you!

Be Well,
